New Series of Reviews!

It occurs to me I haven't reviewed some of my favourite films, I will be doing that soon, one a week in reward to all you readers who are interested in what I think about my favourites!
Some title this will include are:
The Matrix Trilogy
The Terminator (1,2,3,4,series)
Alien (1,2,3,4,Prometheus)
Blade Runner
And many More!!!

The Brothers Bloom (2008 Rian Johnson)

"Tastes like tinfoil"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0844286/

After watching Brick and being thoroughly impressed and seeing the trailer for Looper I was excited however a little worried that Looper would be a generic action SF blockbuster so I thought I should look to Rian Johnson's other blockbuster The Brothers Bloom. I was originally worried by it, a con film about brothers, they are as generic as it gets so you can understand my scepticism. However it was misplaced worry, I should have trusted in Johnson's skill and wit as is shines through in the brothers bloom to make an awesome witty ride of a film. Narratively it packs a double punch, you think it is going to end and then you look, and see there is half a film yet and think YES THANK GOD I WANT MORE!!!

The dialogue is brilliant, the wit of all the characters and the poetry of the speech rolls of the tongue of the characters. Visually the colours of the film are vibrant and bright reflecting the hilarious tone of the film, the framing is often nice and brought to life by the brilliant cast. The con side of the film is intricate and complex and both you and the characters start to wonder if you are being lied to. Enigma codes work really well to set up repeated comical lines and puzzles that ad mystery to the film.

This is another instant favourite of mine, another Rian Johnson win, there is something about it that seems a little like a Jean Pierre Junet film. Again I can't say enough, if you get a chance to watch it, do it! Its awesome!

Silent Hill 3D, Cloud Atllas and Wright's Collider

Silent Hill 3D
The first full trailer for Silent Hill 3D has been released, take a look
Nice img of Pyramid head there, sporting his massive sword, he is nice to see as a random inclusion. It appears as through the film will have a lot of aspects of the game, its been a while since I have played the game but I dont remember the "darkness", Im guessing thats a reference to the first film. However it does look crepy, I like the nurses and pyramid head and it makes me want to revisit the franchise! (Although Im struggling with Homecoming atm)

Cloud Atlas Trailer
WOW!!!! The Wachowski's seem to have brought this epic 12 tale book to life with stunnung visuals, a brilliant cast and a followable storyline. I haven't read the book so I have no idea what its going to be like but it looks like Romeo and Juliet set up with 12 different endings. I am really excited about seeing this one!

Collider? Edgar Wright
Edgar Wright is teaming up with JJ Abrams and screenwriter Mark Protosevich (Thor, I am Legend) to make a SF film after he is finished with Worlds End. Presumably he wont start work on it till after ant man as that has been tied with a 2014 release date. So its very early days but when talking about it in relation to Worlds End he said that Worlds End would be more of a comedy SF and Collider would be more of a straight SF.... but little is known, still with the director having done nothing since Scott Pilgrim VS the World it looks as though his schedule is getting busy!

The Kids Are All Right (2010 Lisa Cholodenko)

"Why did you donate your sperm?" "Because it seemed more fun than donating blood."
I had some idea in my mind that I needed to watch this... after researching the director and writer I have no idea why it was in my head, but whilst on a Mark Ruffalo high I thought I would give it a go anyway. I think this films biggest credibility is that it is extremely well written and completely believable. The characters are deep people who hide emotions, make mistakes and have layer upon layer of troubles that get peeled back as their relationships alter upon the introduction of the children's sperm donor. An interesting catalyst in itself even the outsider (Ruffalo) who comes in to disrupt the peaceful equilibrium is a multi layered character with his own intricacies. These strong flawed characters are what create the realism of the film and draw the audience into an emotional connection with the film. As far as the visuals are concerned, they are fairly mediocre, nothing jumps out but a single slomotion shot at a point of realisation. This intricate multiple character study also sheds light on lesbian relationships in a seemingly truthful and fair way, it shows a lesbian couple dealing with normal problems. In that its themes and ideology are strong and positive, all other ideologies are split between characters, its difficult t say that the film strongly supports or fights any other ideologies. I enjoyed it for its strong characters and think that it is worth a watch, especially for fellow writers struggling with characters.

Aeon Flux (2005 Karyn Kusama)

"This is a war, and people on all sides die."
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0402022/

Action Scifi is the correct genre for this film for sure, unfortunately its blending of the two is fairly weak, its one scene for exposition then one for battle, and these are not well mixed at all. The universe is pretty simple, interesting enough but not particularly well explored, what the film does do is set up an enigma that the story centres around. The only problem with this enigma is the character cares about it way more than we do, I when watching it didn't care at all, no emotional connections are made with the characters and we therefore don't care about their world. The solution again is interesting but still with little identification with the characters you have little emotional connection. I liked it but was not surprised or drawn in all that much.

Ringworld (1970 Larry Niven)

"Wind whistled around the edges and corners of the improbable. By now they were almost directly to spinward of the great mountain. The Arch glowed blue and sharp-edged, the stars were hard, vivid points."
Larry Niven's Ringworld is the first in a 4 book series set in the far future about a group of astronauts, of varying human and alien race, who travel to a previously unknown structure, a handmade ring that orbits a sun. Its a mad SF idea that is rationally explained in the book along with a massive amount of similarly mad ideas, most of these are well described and are really cool. They do unfortunately bog the story down a little, about half way through the book I started getting bored with the constant explanation of different devices at a science level and just waited for more story to kick in. The other problem I had with the book is that with suck extreme aliens and devices it is difficult to image it whilst you are reading it. Besides those small problems the book is really good, the ideas are good and the story is well thought out. It does feel like the first in a series though, theres a lot of set up and not a lot of action, still fun overall.
7/10

Ted (2012 Seth MacFarlane)

"Now if there's one thing you can be sure of, it's that nothing is more powerful than a young boy's wish. Except an Apache helicopter. An Apache helicopter has machine guns AND missiles. It is an unbelievably impressive complement of weaponry, an absolute death machine"
As someone who tired of Family Guy and American Dad pretty fast I wasn't that drawn in by Seth MacFarlane, the trailer on the other hand did drag me in. I'm not going to lie I laughed a lot through the film, MacFarlane's trademark non pc humour is used by Ted who is annoyingly voiced by MacFarlane who uses his Peter Griffin voice. The most annoying thing about the film is Mark Wahlberg's accent which grated on me from start to finish.

All that aside its a pretty traditional buddy movie with a little romance thrown in and a slightly new twist. Still a few giggles can be had, I enjoyed my occasional laugh.

The Guild (Felicia Day 2007-present)

"Greetings Guildies... Herman, call me Vork, I simply respond to it better"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1138475/

Finding good Webseries is like finding an enchanted sword in a forest, it doesn't happen often but the guild is one of those enchanted goodies. Written by cult nerd actor Felicia Day The Guild is a comical web series about Codex and her online guild friends who decide to meet in real life. If you know Felicia Day's GeekSundry work such as her Flog you will know that she is a massive gamer, for the Guild this means it is packed with nerdy game quotes and logic that littler the conversation like comical.... litter. the characters themselves are extreme, hilarious and for gamers like myself worryingly close to being realistic. The situations they end up in are also hilarious and there dealings with cameo celebs also add to the successful humour of the show. If you have ever gotten hooked on an MMORPG then you will love this series.

More details, the stuff I know/ concept art

I have been planning to do this short for a while now. As you may know I have been working for nearly a year now on a SF script and world for a series, whilst I dont want to make a start on that until I have the money to do it justice, I am itching to film something in that world. So I am! I just dont know what exactly... I have been doing a little concept art for it today and whilst doing it I thought I may centre it around the mad dogs, or at least a possible candidate... that wont mean a lot to most of you... My only problem at the moment is that I enjoy character pieces but I feel like I need something to say in a short, a poignant message of some sort... Anyway a few characters have grown from my scribbles so your welcome to have a look.

Pencils are light.... Ink time!
Let me know what you Ink :P

New Short!

Its not here yet... I haven't started writing it yet... but I have my ideas... I have the look... so just wait for a few months and my new project will be here. More news as it develops!

Alphas (2011-.....)

Alpha's is a scifi series in its second season, it shares the same universe as Warehouse 13 and Eureka that has been created by the Syfy channel. Whilst the series is relatively formulaic and each episode sticks to the format of the team hunting an alpha, it manages to stay fresh and has begun to develop some interesting arcs. It helps that during the first season they had some excellent guest stars like Brent Spiner and Summer Glau who have hinted at returning. The six characters in the team are charming characters who all have legitimate and in depth abilities with intelligent down sides, the psychological and medical analysis of the alphas abilities is also fresh, no magical or mystical powers are used and the realism this gives is happily welcome. Bill and Gary's interactions in particular tend to be the heart of the show and have not yet gotten repetitive however I can imagine it being overdone.

Unfortunately the second season is to be as short as the 12ep first season so it is hard to say where the arcs will go, on the other hand it is also difficult to get bored of as there is so little of it. Overall I really like the series and am looking forward to seeing it develop.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004 Wes Anderson)

"Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go on an overnight drunk, and in 10 days I'm going to set out to find the shark that ate my friend and destroy it. Anyone who wants to tag along is more than welcome."
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0362270/
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou had some interesting giggles and intelligent lines, the visuals were nicely stylised and well coloured but nothing that good actually happened. Bill Murray's performance was good and the theme was interesting, a film within a film, but for the whole film I expected more to happen or less to happen. It was somewhere between a slow stylised indie film and a comical drama. As I said, Murray's performance was good and there was the occasional laugh but I wouldn't watch it again it just wasn't interesting or exciting enough. It took up an hour and a half of time and I didnt dislike it, I just expected more. I rate it about the same as watching friends or two and a half men.

Robocop (1987 Paul Verhoeven)

"Dead or alive your coming with me"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093870/
Violent, cheesy, bloody and comical. That sums up Robocop pretty well, the sheer gore is excellent it is something that film today needs more of. The satirical comedy is also awesome, the corrupt multi national evil conglomerate OCP with corrupt executives and both the satire and the blood are almost trademark of Verhoeven's scifi's Total Recall, Starship Troopers and Robocop.

The film has dated quite badly, the technology is quite obviously not that advanced however it is cheesily comical to watch, even more so when mixed with the political satire. All in all despite its ageing it is funny classic scifi, a film to be enjoyed.

Brick (2005 Rian Johnson)

Throw one at me if you want, hash head. I've got all five senses and I slept last night, that puts me six up on the lot of you.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0393109/
WOW!

When I saw this film, I knew nothing about it except that it had Joseph Gordon-Levitt in. So I was completely unprepared for the stylistic brilliance of a hard boiled Noir set in an American high school. This sounds odd I know... it is odd, but somehow it works perfectly, due on part to excellent performances by all involved. The transference of the Noir detective is only done in part,  the tongue and cheek mix of dark drug culture and comical overlords is intelligently placed within the world of high school. Whilst drugs are the same as they would be if it was a straight crime drama the school setting trades overbearing police chiefs with pushy principles and dark meetings with lunch.

At its, heart even without the intelligent blending of styles, the film is solidly about Brendan and his single mission to find out what has happened to his ex girlfriend. Gordon-Levitt makes this film, the believability of his character and your investment in his story and emotions are what the whole film hinges on and the brilliance of the film is a true testament to his work, he portrays the character perfectly. His character is a classic troubled "detective" with heart behind a hard shell,  brains and stubborn determination that get him where he needs to be. The small flashback sequence in the film is amazing, it places his character perfectly telling the audience all they need to know about his history and emotions. Also, he's... cool as fuck

The language takes a little getting used to but once you get to understand it the speech sounds almost darkly poetic. The storylines and twists are that of classical detective novels and films, they are executed really well, and for that and many reasons this film was pure awesome. Its been a while since I have founds a gem like this but with all my heart I implore you to watch it, you wont be disappointed.

In Time (2011 Andrew Niccol)

"I don't have time. I don't have time to worry about how it happened. It is what it is. We're genetically engineered to stop aging at 25. The trouble is, we live only one more year, unless we can get more time. Time is now the currency. We earn it and spend it. The rich can live forever. And the rest of us? I just want to wake up with more time on my hand than hours in the day."
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1637688/
This is a really interesting one.... Justine Timberlake in something I have never heard of before made me pretty wary but I watched it anyway, lets say it surprised me. The concept is simple you only have so much time, and you get paid in time. The interest comes when you consider the "time zones" different areas of prestige where you must pay to travel into the more exclusive higher tier areas. Then the film immediatly becomes about class, slums, riches and robbery. The political undertones are pretty obvious and make for a nice film. The film doesn't make the mistake of explaining how the 'time life' thing happened, this would have been a mistake because there is no way it could have happened which would not have been stupid. My problem with the film was that there was a little too many half storylines in it, Timberlakes father, the policeman (Cillian Murphy), the romantic subplot. They were all a little too heavy and they combined to make a bit of a mess, not enough to ruin the film though, I did still enjoy it. Timberlakes performance was not too bad and I may turn my nose us less at him in the future. Not a bad flick at all

Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001 Christophe Gans)

"Can you savages mate with white women?" "All women are the same colour when the candle blows out"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0237534/
French Historical drama can be hard to follow, slow and uninteresting... Brotherhood of the Wolf is none of these things! It is history with a large dose of action, romance and politics. The world of the film, france in the 1700's, is well recreated, the audience gets a peek into the exclusive lives of the aristocracy who are in this case at a wrong. The frame narrative is a nice way of including narration however the political upheaval in the frame story is not one I was aware of therefore the end just confused me. The two protagonists are a classic double act, one a people person and the other a fighter and an Apache in touch with nature. Despite their conventional roles they look awesome and Gregoire is ever the silver tongued genius. Mani's fight scenes are something a kin to The Matrix, with slomotion and freeze frame being used to punctuate parts of the action. The colour in the film is really nice... that sounds weird but the rich reds, creams and golds in contrast to the cold whites and blues are iconically beautiful and exactly what an audience has come to expect from french cinema.

The themes and narrative are equally intelligent, as the peasants are attacked by a beast in the narrative it is the aristocracy and the church come under attack from the film, which paints them as corrupt and evil. The theme of racism is prevalent as you would expect from a film set in the 1700's and Gans makes a conscious effort to bat away any of the racist characters with the common sense and acceptance of the more identifiable and likable characters. There is also something classically fairy tale about the film, even though it is based on true events, the mysticism, simple characters and the villainy of .... (i will let u find out) give the fairytale narrative whilst the bold colours and playing with time make the film feel hyper real and wonderfully vibrant.

It was a random buy and a random watch but I really enjoyed it, I also chose to watch it in french... english dubs are awful.

Tron Legacy (2010 Joseph Kosinski)

"Bio digital Jazz man"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1104001/
Tron Legacy was a very long awaited sequel for sure there was a lot of pressure to meet up to fan demands and a lot of trepidation in the advancement of the visuals. Was the wait worth it? In  my eyes yes, although I didn't have to wait, to me it was just a sequel, but what a good sequel it was. It was its own original story jam packed with nods to the classic whilst being a direct sequel, almost an oxymoron but legacy managed it. The visuals again are brilliant, not as innovative of course but still excellent, the black and sleek costumes embedded with the iconic colours from the classic look like a perfect up to date version of the classic. The skies of thunder and the rocky landscapes are another nice touch, making the grid seem more like a natural landscape. The techno soundtrack also adds to the verisimilitude of the film as Daft Punk do some of their best work to create a coherent vibrant soundtrack to match the action and a more traditional score for the more dramatic sections tying the film together nicely.

The story itself within the frame of the young Sam Flynn finding his father is also a good dual narrative, Clu is a brilliant idea and the perversion of a perfect world is a strong theme worth exploring. Clu's character is easy to understand when you know that he just strives to make the perfect system, this makes SPOILER "death  scene really nice, as Kevin forgives him and  excepts blame END OF SPOILER. Visually I really lik Clu, he is supposed to look like a young Flynn but the effect is a little too smooth and digital, this doesn't work in the flashback scene for Flynn but it does work for Clu, the slight digitisation makes him look a little more menacing.

Quorra and the ISO's are also a cool idea, they give Kevin a reason to have been so obsessed and they show Clu's true tyranny. Kevin Flynn himself is again, as Jeff Bridges always is, a really cool bastard. He uses phrases like "radical" and "bio digital jazz man". These are heartwarming and make the audience feel like Flynn still lives in the world of the 80's that he left. Tron/ Alan's reappearances are also really cool however a keen eyed viewer will recognise Tron's costume before he is revealed. Ed Dillinger Jr. is also in the film, with such a minor part played by a big actor its a hint at his involvement with a sequel. Finally Sam Flynn is a cool tech savy anarchist who works to put Encom's work out for free like his father would have wanted. so all in all a really good cast and really good characters.

The whole world seems to have developed whilst we have been waiting for it, for this reason the story seems fresh and new. The end gives a sequel an opportunity to do something different yet again so hopefully that will be seen. Again I'm a Tron Fanboy so this may be a little biased but I do love this film.

The Wolverine, Cap 2, TDKR

The Wolverine, No Jessica Biel
It seems someone said something to upset someone in the negotiation as Jessica Beil will no longer be a part of The Wolverine. Unfortunately they are recasting so its not a change of the script and Viper will still be included.

Captain America 2, The Winter Soldier, Falcon casting?
Anthony Mackie is apparently in talks to appear in the second cap film as one of Cap's sidekicks The Falcon. Although this news has been posted in quite a lot of places its still very early days so I wouldn't be surprised if it was a less important role, The Falcon would be cool though.

TDKR An attack on Mitt Romney
All I can do is laugh and repost this story. Rush Limbaugh a right wing political commentator in the US has said that TDKR is a direct attack on Mitt Romney and his old company Bain Capital

"So this evil villain in the new Batman movie is named Bane. And there's discussion out there as to whether or not this was purposeful and whether or not it will influence voters," said Limbaugh. "A lot of people are going to see the movie. And it's a lot of brain-dead people – entertainment, the pop culture crowd – and they're going to hear Bane in the movie and they're going to associate Bain." "And the thought is that when they're going to start paying attention to the campaign later in the year and Obama and the Democrats keep talking about Bain, not Bain Capital but Romney and Bain, that these people will start thinking back to the Batman movies: 'Oh yeah, I know who that is!'"

Wow.... some people are reeeaaallly stupid....

Tron (1982 Steven Lisberger)

"On the other side of the screen, it all looks so easy"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084827/
Tron is one of those nerd films I have an undying love for so prepare for a gushing review!

Let me start by admiring the pure ingenuity of both the visuals and of the idea. The concept then is an interesting one, the narrative on a wide scale is simple, a group of friends taking down a controlling overlord to clear the name of the protagonist Kevin Flynn. The world in which that narrative takes place is a little more complex, Kevin Flynn gets trapped in the world of the grid, where computer programs live and emulate their "users". It's genius really, not necessarily believable and it doesn't need to be simply because its so insanely new, honestly I think the idea alone is ridiculously innovative and almost enough to make the retelling of one of the oldest kinds of stories interesting. The immense visuals are another reason to watch, in 1982 a successful mix between live action and animation was ridiculously difficult, whilst the black and white visuals are dated for their time its visual effects at their best. Again the visuals are shockingly innovative and apparently came from an obsession with early games like pong.

The acting and characters themselves are yet again a reason to be drawn in, Jeff Bridges, as always, plays one of the coolest characters in history, a geek god, a tech genius and the wronged man. Bruce Boxleitner also plays excellent characters, Tron the newfound defender of the Grid, and out of the grid Alan a kind but careful programmer who "got the girl". These  characters interactions are authentic and interesing and we can't forget about Ram. Ram is the programme that welcomes both Flynn and the audience into the world of the Grid.

The smaller ideas in the film, like the bit, the water, the games anf all of the other interesting little facts seem to really make the world seem real and fun. Fun really seems to be the right world, there is a charming amount of comedy and life in the film and in Flynn that translates to the audience giving (me at least) a smile like a cheshire cat and feel all warm inside. Another element that adds to that is the sountrack, its simple but is reminiscent of early arcade games. The really simple motif plays throughout and is instantly recognisable, it links the crescendos of the film perfectly triggering that chesshire grin in me.

Its not profound of deep, but its cool, its one of the coolest films/ franchises. Even though its only 2films for now I rank it with sf masterpieces like Terminator, Alien and The Matrix. I really do love this film to pieces it is special and brilliant. Long Live Programs.
9.5/10

The Punisher Dirty Laundry

"Do you know the difference between revenge and justice?"
Brutal, bloody and brilliant sums up this little short with Thomas Jane reprising his role as the not so friendly Frank Castle aka The Punisher. This was a completely independent "fan made" short, without any rights being held.... so it might not be online for long especially as if you listen closely you may recognise a little bit of Hans Zimmer's TDKR score. Either way Thomas Jane always made a good Punisher and to see him enthusiastic about the character gives fans hope that he could officially reprise the role in the future. Whilst I'm not a big fan of Punisher comics there is a a reason he works on film a little better. Comic books are a serial medium and over a long period of time you need to see a character develop and grow, The Punisher struggles to do this as his ethos is so very simple and he can only kill more or kill a little less, story lines which may take up a few years but no real growth. This however is of little importance to a film, I think writing a second full Punisher feature would be hard as you would have dealt with his origin arc but the possibility is there and as this short shows a little justice is nice to see.

Jane said about the short ""I wanted to make a fan film for a character I've always loved and believed in - a love letter to Frank Castle & his fans. It was an incredible experience with everyone on the project throwing in their time just for the fun of it. It's been a blast to be a part of from start to finish -- we hope the friends of Frank enjoy watching it as much as we did making it."
The short itself is cool as fuck! The beginning realism and purely disgusting characters make you will Punisher forward to do something, particularly the womans screams whilst Frank is doing his laundry. Whilst the escalating violence, awesomely cut between tumbling laundry and a toy grabber to raise tension, turns to a child Frank still needs a slightly hammy push by a disable war vet Ron Pearlman. Ok so Pearlman goes a little far but he makes a few points that appeal to my gang hating nerd side... they are indeed animals and you do want to "do something". The drinking metaphor of 6 months sober obviously relates to killing but the beautiful things Frank does with a bottle of Jim make up for its cheese. The masking on the camera makes the fight look really sweet and the large helping of blood is perfect for Frank's brutal nature, bones hanging out of legs, harsh for sure but you can't help but smile.

The only thing I question about the short (apart from copy write infringement) is whether he should have killed the last guy himself or not. I get that he let her get her revenge and that he doing the killing may be more like "justice" because its fair or something like that but I think that one of Frank's main traits is that he knows killing is wrong. The short itself shows this or he wouldn't have "gone sober" and wouldn't need such a big push but I don't think punisher would want to drag someone else into his world of murder. Or maybe he did, or just thought it was more fair. The "new" logo was hyped about but its pretty much the old logo, however the use of a shirt at the end to ensure  viewers that it is Punisher was a nice way of making the short without actually using the Punisher. If Marvel get on his back about it he can say that its just a guy who drops a shirt... its much more likely it will be WB getting pissy because of the use of Zimmer's music.

Watch it while you can! This could get taken down, I hope it doesn't and I hope marvel go "ahh that Thomas Jane is all right, lets make a movie!" but I'm not holding my breath.

Last Bit of SDCC news... for now. Hobbit, Item 47, Walking Dead, After Earth Viral

Not much news for the end of SDCC but a few little stories at least.

The Hobbit 48 fps
Jacksons the Hobbit will be released in 48fps, double the norm but when it was showed a few months ago audiences had mixed feelings. He has recently defended his choice saying
"Why, as an industry where we have dwindling audiences especially among the kids, should we be content to sit back and say that we got it right in 1927? … No! The kids aren’t going to [care] about the frame rates. If something feels immersive to them, if it feels more exciting, spectacular, sharper, clearer, that’s what they’re going to like"
I agree, Im looking forward to seeing the difference

Item 47
A clip of Item 47 has been released. Item 47 is marvels most recent short and it kinda speaks for itself, who knows exactly what happens next but its a pretty cool one shot either way.

The Walking Dead s3 trailer
I prefer the graphic novels to the Walking dead series 100 times over so for me this is a little disappointing. Whilst the prison makes me happy its a shame it looks like its going to include that racist guy nobody cares about from s1 which is annoying. Not only that but Rick should be going to woodbury!!! and it looks like he wont. Se despite the trailer looking ok its still very disappointing its not following the GR's more closely. Michonne does look cool though.

After Earth Viral
http://www.empireonline.com/news/feed.asp?NID=34609
The viral is simple, historical, cool and interesting! It uses the FB timeline better than FB itself and makes me look forward to after earth even more!

Last patch of SDCC news is on the way

Sunday, 15 July 2012

SDCC news, lots of it.

The Hobbit Extra Footage
Jackson has said that he would like to shoot more footage for the Hobbit films and that this could end in two ways, extended versions or a third film. With the release dates for the films being Dec 2012 and Dec 2013 if there is a third film it will surely be pegged for a Dec 2014 release, although I'm all up for as much middle earth action as possible its a little shocking that the Hobbit may be three films when the LOTR trilogy are only one film each.

Hellboy 3
Pretty simple news, Hellboy was always set up to be a bit of a trilogy and in the past when asked, series director Gillermo Del Toro would only say that Perlman (who plays Hellboy) wouldn't want to spend time in the makeup again. At SDCC however the two got together and said that they would be actively working together to get a third film made. Despite the low box office of Hellboy 2, it was a pretty good movie so I hope it works out.

Solomon Kane
If your British you have already had a chance to see this at the cinema however the films never picked up a US distributor. Until now! So Solomon Kane will be making the rounds in America probably next year. I saw it a while ago, its not a bad film, it fills the hole of non cheesy, dark period fantasy nicely.

Iron Man 3 Costume
Well it's very gold.... and its not the armour from the extremis storyline. The circular core is back and the whole suit looks a little bulkier but that it. Like most of the versions we have seen there isn't a massive difference and I think Marvel need to find a new way of developing Stark without just giving him a new suit, I'm sure when the film comes out we will find out that there is a good reason for all of the suits interesting aspects and will get to see Stark develop.... just maybe not along the lines of the Extremis storyline. The details of some shown footage have been released MASSIVE SPOILERS WITHIN (i didnt read it all myself but click the link to read http://collider.com/comic-con-iron-man-3-panel/178379/)

Marvel Animation
New marvel animations will include, Ultimate Spiderman, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H (including red hulk, she hulk and Abomb), Earth's Mightiest heroes will continue. So if your a fan of the Marvel kids animations its all gooooood news.

Silent Hill Revelation 3D new footage
New silent hill footage (apparently the only PG showable footage they could find) looks pretty cool, the nurses are awesome! I can't remeber this hapening in the game but I could be mistaken but the quest to find someone is a very Silent Hill quest. Not only that but I really like the mention of the Carnival, if it sticks to the game that place will be creepy to say the least., and the search and sounds really similar to the kind of gameplay often seen in Silent Hill, so in conclusion, looks good.

Phase 2 Marvel Cinema Announcements
These are really simple images for the next few films so I will just simply show em to you :)
1Iron man 3 (^^^the news for that is up there)
2Thor: The dark World. Cool title a little over a year to wait, and I don't knwo what the Dark World is... Im guessing not earth so we might see an expansion of the world tree. It seems like expansion is the Marvel Movie plan in general.
3Captain America:The Winter Soldier. This should tell you exactly what will happen in the film. If you don't know who the Winter Soldier is and what he does then I dont care WOOP Winter Soldier!
4Ant-Man. Only a logo has been shown to the world except for a "Small" amount unfinished test footage that was a "Giant" success. The costume has a "little" nod to the classic StanLee version and the "tiny" amount of footage showed Antman changing size to kick ass "one inch at a time" (Wright).
5.Guardians of the Galaxy..... Im a Marvel fan and I know practically nothing about Guardians of the Galaxy except that they need an abreviation and there sales are about to jump.... I mean really jump. Although this seems a random movie to shove in phase two if you recognised the galactic menace (understatement much) Thanos at the end of the avengers then it makes a little more sense. With Marvel using thanos and the Chitouri or whatever (still angry at the use of ultimate skrull like villains) it is clear they want to be more galactic and expansive, with this in mind GOTG(?) seems less random and I'm guessing will have links to the "Dark World" in thor 2, if in no other way than they both expand the Marvel Cinematic U. Concept images for Guardians have been released to gain interest take a look vvvv

Joss Whedon
Finally for now as a Whedonite there has been a lot to follow, Much Ado, Dr Horrible, Firefly, Avengers 2, Socialist arguing, ECT ECT.... If you want to hear a few of the interesting Whedon related news stories I really cant rewrite them any better than these two pages, Click the links and read about what is going on in all of the above whedon projects :)

http://collider.com/comic-con-joss-whedon-dark-horse/178661/

Also should he be nicknames Joss "The Boss" Whedon?

Thats all for now, more SDCC news tomorrow and late tonight... this is exhausting.

Howl's Moving Castle (2004 Hayao Miyazaki)

"Don't be alarmed but I'm being followed. Act normal. Sorry, it looks like you're involved."
Howl's Moving Castle is a film I saw when I saw very into anime, whilst I am no longer a massive anime or manga fan I have a lot of love for this wonderful fairytale masterpiece. I think the word fairytale is the best way to describe Howl's Moving Castle, its the only way to sum up Miyazaki's fantastical vision of magic, monsters, demons and all other supernatural things that are richly involved in HMC. Not only that but its the only way to describe the journey Sophie goes through from start to finish the narrative the characters and the visuals SCREAM fairytale, and its positively wonderful!

I love Howl, he is one of my all time favourite heroes, he is cool, dark a romantic and a narcissistic man with the ability to turn into a giant bird thing. Behind all of that he has doubts and fears and works to overcome his problem with running away from confrontation at every possible time. Sophie the more idealistic character of the two inspires Howl to stand and fight whether it be in some unnamed war or against the wicked witch of waste it is Sophie that inspires him to fight as howl rather than hiding behind his multiple personas. I think this is the best character development of the story and whilst I like all of the characters in the odd family of the castle, all of the other struggles are more related to narrative plot rather than personal character development.

Obviously the film is visually beautiful as always with studio ghibli however I think the castle door being multiple locations and the moving castle itself give the film the opportunity to explore a large range of visual images, the city docks, the open field and the battle scorched skies being some of my favourite animated images ever. There are a lot of Miyazaki's usual themes woven in as with most studio ghibli films, Love beating all for example and breaking curses. Howl's refusal to be an official force in the war relates to Miyazaki's pacifism and Howl's wings are the epitome of flight that is in so many of Miyazaki's films. The theme of water is also prevelant in Howl's Moving Castle and with the rest of the themes HMC fits nicely in the Ghibli collection.

This and The Cat Returns are my two favourite StudioGhibli films and if for nothing else than the visual pleasure I recommend Howl's Moving Castle.

Browncoats Unite!, World End, The Wolverine

I know its late, and I have already posted news today but its SDCC and theres ALOT happening!!

Bigish news on Firefly, for its 10th anniversary the science channel are doing a Doc calleed Browncoats Unite about Firefly and the 2012 SDCC comicon reunion panel. It will also feature a table question thing, in which the cast and writers will discuss some of the ever present questions left unanswered by Firefly. Great news right? I think so, I really want to see some of the footage from the panel and the whole Doc asap, apparently when asked what the fans mean to him Whedon cried.... awwww Read the fuller thing here http://insidetv.ew.com/2012/07/13/firefly-comic-con-panel/

Worlds End has been announced and this is the 1st promo poster, it will go into shooting this year! The plot so far goes "the film will follow five old friends who attempt to re-create a heroic pub crawl they attempted 20 years previous, which ends at a pub called The World’s End. But as the title implies, the fate of humankind also hangs in the balance." Sounds interesting... i look forward to that when it happens to me :P and the film obviously

Finally Jessica Biel is supposedly to be playing Viper in The Wolverine, whilst i like the actress i dislike the interjection of viper into the story and am hoping not to see too many american in a film based in japan.

Dexter, Dredd, Arrow, Halo 4 Follow Unto Dawn.

Dexter Season 7, 2minute sneak peek
If you haven't seen Dexter S6 then sorry for the MASSIVE SPOILER! But Dexter has been caught, and this time by someone he can't kill to keep quiet, his beloved sister "Bev". Dexter has been found out before but always found a way around it, but upon Deb's creepy conclusion that she was romantically in love with her titular adopted brother she comes to talk to him alone... Unfortunately for Dexter he has just eliminated on of the best villains of the series and Deb walks right in. A cliffhanger that was incredibly shocking, the previous and numerous times in the past Dexter has been under pressure have been equally shocking but he frequently weasels his way out of these tricky situations. This one was yet another situation you would expect to stump him but this preview is unsurprisingly disappointing. Not to the extent that I will stop watching, as a recent convert to the series I am not too bored of the slow pace but I could understand if the possible return to the stasis quo was off putting for long time watchers. It still has me gripped and tricked into thinking that Dexter is going to have to change, and if not then Deb must.... We can only wait and see... On the upside at least it jumps straight into it.

Dredd Blood thirsty slow motion 1 minute glimpse
I was a little harsh on the last trailer for Dredd and it has been prominent at SDCC, this clip has been released and contains a lot of the footage from the first trailer. The only thing I can take away from this clip is that I am going to get very bored with slo mo effects whilst watching Dredd.

Arrow
I haven't been too interested in the Arrow the original trailer looked cool but its hard to tell with superhero films. Could it be the new Smallville? Who knows but the pilot is worth a watch, The Cape was the best tv superhero series I have seen and that got cancelled so who knows what the powers that be will do with it but I need a superhero series shaped hole filling.... not like that!

Halo 4 Follow Unto Dawn

I am really impressed with 343's latest halo movie, a trailer to a webseries to be released in november which shows humans fighting along side Master Chief to fight back unshown enemies (likely covenant). Chief isn't the main character though, the 5 part 15min long weekly instalments will focus on an inspired UNSC cadet Thomas Lasky who grows up to lead and succeed, maybe.

IN OTHER NEWS I AM OUTRAGED THAT FOOTBALL HAS THE HEADLINE OVER A MASSACRE IN SYRIA.... I am disappointed in the general media!

King of Laughter

"If you meet Geoge Bush I would say""He is human being, other human beings he have to join in laughter, smiling a good positive democratic approach"
This is a bit of an obscure one for me but I think the comparison between these wto doc's is interesting sooooo read and watch! The King of Laughter is a 3min doc about Belachew Grima an Ethiopian in Wallsaw who spreads happiness with laughter. He laughs constantly throughout the aurally intense piece and his words, jokes and laughter are surely a good thing, simple camera work and strong use of speeding up camera footage show Belachew bringing happiness to many people. When it comes to explaining why, he tells the audience he lost everything he had in Ethiopia more than once and the only way he could find to deal with it was laughter. The overall message for the piece is simple, laugh and make yourself and others happy. The Wallsaw facts about it being the saddest place in Britain are only included as a frame for Belachew's character and he is surely the centre piece. A good doc however it isnt all that interesting.
4/10

This is a more interesting follow up Doc about Belachew which more closely explores his life and his efforts to spread laughter in his homeland of Ethiopia. This is simply a better documentary, whilst I understand the previous doc is specifically made as a 3 minute look at the King of Laughter it is simply not enough time for the audience to become invested in the character or his story and the only come away with a slight wish to laugh a little more.

The king of Laughter in Ethiopia however gives Belachew's story the time it deserves and does not hesitate to show Belachew at his low moments as well as his high moments by taking him to the graveyard of his parents and sister who died or HIV. HIV becomes a small focus of the Doc when it is revealed that Belachew himself suffers and that he uses his laughter to help other sufferers who are alienated for their illness. Laughter in his homeland seems also to be a political statement in Belachew's eyes as he sees it as a way to unite the warring tribes in Ethiopia and although this is a nice message and idea the Doc seems to treat it in a sceptical way as it is at this point the interviewer brings up the situation the day before in which a man would not laugh with Belachew. Belachew himself puts this down to psychological problems that mean the brain cannot produce a laughing hormone and he seems to dismiss the interviewers belief that the man may just have not wanted to laugh. The doc seems to further ridicule Belachew by showing him before he attempts to get into the African Union with laughter and then cutting to black titles saying he failed.

The last title sequence gives us a few irrelevant facts but for me the strongest things about the piece are if Belachew and his friends can laugh in their situation why cant we? And the best comment from Belachew throughout is "If you meet Geoge Bush I would say""He is human being, other human beings he have to join in laughter, smiling a good positive democratic approach"
The longer Doc is definitely better I give it a

Daredevil, Fantastic Four, Robocop, Marvel Phase One Boxset

Day one of SDCC and I have quite a bit of typing to do...

Daredevil loses David Slade.
First is some bad news, Fox has failed to schedule well enough to keep David Slade as the director for Daredevil. However the script is apparently ready so Fox will be looking to put someone in his place quickly, before the rights return to Marvel.

Fantastic Four gains Josh Trank
Whilst the DD news is bad it is coupled with Fox gaining Josh Trank as the director for FF. Trank's Chronicle was brilliant so it is good to see him with a franchise that needs a fresh perspective.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase One DVD Boxset
WTF?!?
Thats right Marvel are releasing a holy of holies box set full of "The Avengers" "Iron Man" "Iron Man 2" "The Incredible Hulk" "Captain America" and "Thor". For this alone I need to start getting blu rays although the jump in format is infuriating. It would be nice if you could trade in DVD's to get stupidly cheap blurays but oh well that rant is for another post.... Lots of bonus material and prop type things will be included as well as special features. Wow only $140.... wish I had money and that blu ray player.... preorder it now on amazon to get it in September

Robocop
Real quick update on the new Robocop, according to Joel Kinnaman who will be playing Robocop Jose Pidalha's itteration of Robocop will be "realistic. It would be grounded. If you look at his movies, they're serious and gritty, so it will have that quality, but it won't be deadly serious. It will have a satirical quality, and it will have throwbacks to the original. It's going to have that wink in the eye, but we're not looking to replicate the Verhoeven tone."
Good if you ask me, love a little bit of SF satire :)

I'm Still Here (2010 Casey Affleck)

"Well great, I'd like a fucking joint. And to be anywhere other than Washington fucking D.C. But life is not a Christmas day."
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1356864/
I'm Still Here is a Mockumentary in which Joaquin Phoenix renounces his career as an actor for a chance to be a rap star. For 2 years Joaquin kept up the façade of his new career and the Mockumentary I'm still here shows his highs and lows whilst he attempts to create himself as a rap star. Much of this is unreliable however one of the more interesting scenes is set on David Letterman's talk show in which Joaquin is the worst possible guest, chewing gum, being unresponsive and refusing to remove his glasses. After this scene he breaks down at the thought he may have ruined his career.

Much of the film, after knowing its heavily constructed, becomes less poignant and stops being an inside look into a celebrities breakdown, even a fake breakdown, and becomes more of a representation of what Joaquin and Casey Affleck (the director) believe would happen. Despite the lack of truth this pervays there is still a sick realism to the film, from a narrative view it is easy to draw parallels with Walk the Line, Johnny Cash's biographical film which Joaquin stars in. There are still some nice points in it but over all it is a difficult film to watch, the length the deception goes to gives it credit but its not a fun film to watch nor it is enlightening.
I would give it a 5/10 for its innovation and dedication but say don't watch it if your not a fan or aren't that interested because you will NOT enjoy it.

Catfish (2010 Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman)

"They used to tank cod from Alaska all the way to China. They'd keep them in vats in the ship. By the time the codfish reached China, the flesh was mush and tasteless. So this guy came up with the idea that if you put these cods in these big vats, put some catfish in with them and the catfish will keep the cod agile. And there are those people who are catfish in life. And they keep you on your toes. They keep you guessing, they keep you thinking, they keep you fresh. And I thank god for the catfish because we would be droll, boring and dull if we didn't have somebody nipping at our fin."
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1584016/
I saw Catfish a year or so ago and was really intrigued by the trailer alone, and found myself asking, is this real? The film displays itself as a documentary but the simple fact that the narrative is so extreme and is filmed from such a random start point brings its authenticity into question.

Marketed as the "Anti Social Network" the film came out around the same time as "The Social Network" and tells the story of someone using Facebook to lie and manipulate the main character "Nev" to the extent of having a relationship with a person who is not who they say they are. The whole thing begins to unravel as Nev looks into details and finds that some of the information is incorrect. The disturbing climax is a simple one in which Nev and his friend and his brother drive to meet the family he is so familiar with only to find something he wasnt expecting.

Whilst this is in no way a conventional documentary so much as a found footage style drama, an effect created by the strong use of restricted narration and a linear structure with all things being seen from from Nev's point of view, it is still supposedly true. The idea that as a viewer your not sure about the authenticity of the narrative ties really nicely into the story in which Nev is not sure how real the things he is being told are. This parallel makes it a really strong and intelligent film whilst making it extremely engaging as the feelings of Nev and the viewer are linked making him instantly identifiable.

Whether the documentary is real or not is an interesting debate, it doesn't completely matter. Of course it would be great to believe it was real but even if it wasn't the theme of lies and double crosses and false truths is what the whole film is about. If it is constructed then it is brilliantly constructed and feels completely real!

I would give it a watch if you fancy something with a little more thought behind it than your average flick.
8/10

Chronicle (2012 Josh Trank)

"Yes, it was the black guy this time."
I saw Chronicle at the cinemas a little while ago, I was attracted to it as it was a superhero film, however it does not origonate from a comic book so I was excited to see a story I knew nothing about. I was not disappointed, despite the writer laying the torment onto the main character a little thick, it was a good film focusing on the immoral things poeple could be pushed to. It cheated its way out of being a handicam film by giving the characters control over the camera with telekinesis but the post modern aspect of film making is always nice to see despite the fact it was accompanied with the line "the camera distances you from everyone else" to destroy all subtext. The character development was nice and visually some of the shots achieved and the concepts such as the spider and the crushing of the car was really nice. It was also good to see the only costume being donned a gasmask fireman suit rather than leather and latex which helped to give the film some authenticity. Finally one of my favourite things is what they didnt do, they didnt waste time coming up with a complex origin or trying to explain what gave them powers. If they had, it would not have worked! No question about it, it would have made it silly and would have wasted screen time so I am extremely happy they didnt rely on a meteorite or government testing or anything equally cliche. (PS comics can get away with it because of their medium and because many of them are the archetypes the cliches have been made from.)

So I would recommend!! 9/10

The Wolverine, TDKR, The Hobbit, 50 shades, Dexter, Deus Ex.

So there is a lot of news today and with Comicon season in swing its not surprising, so lets start with some things comic movie related!

The Wolverine Casting
So casting has been announced for the Japanese characters that will feature in James Mangold's upcoming Wolverine Origins sequel, The Wolverine. If you had any doubts about the storyline for the film it was always going to be a story based on his time in Japan.... If you dont know wolverine well he kinda goes there alot. Hugh Jackman always wanted to do the Wolverine story written by Claremont and drawn by Miller and with the casting now announced it sounds like its going to be pretty close, as all of the main characters have been cast. Hiroyuki Sanada will play mob boss Lord Shingen, Tao Okamoto will play Mariko, Shingen's daughter, Rila Fukushima will play Yukio, a Japanese assassin, and Hal Yamanouchi will play the classic Japanese samurai the Silver Samurai. So theres the main cast and it involves some great characters who are vital to Claremont's story, so I am looking forward to a hopefully more accurate comicbook film.

The Dark Knight Rises (TDKR) soundtrack, A tale of two cities and cape flying
Firstly Hans Zimmner's soundtrack has been released, you can hear it here http://collider.com/dark-knight-rises-soundtrack/178669/. So whats my opinion on the soundtrack? There are some nice motifs and some good tracks that I am sure suit the movie really well. But thats what Zimmer does he writes a LOT of really good soundtracks that ebb and swell in the perfect places, I look forward to seeing the film with the soundtrack. The Prometheus OST still beats it though.
Another story attached to TDKR is A Tale Of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens, the Nolan brothers have revealed the class debates and the book have "influenced" the Dark Knights finale so that will be interesting.
Finally in TDKR news scientists have claimed that with his cape the dark knight would be able to glide at the same kind of distances in the film. Unfortunatly he would reach over 50mph and that landing would kill him.... that would be funny, survived two face and the joker but didn't slow down on his glide aaaaaand dead :P

The Hobbit New Images
(full images here) http://www.themarysue.com/the-hobbit-movie-beorn/#10
I am looking forward to The Hobbit, no doubt. This host of new images shows a few peaks at new locations and characters, they all look pretty nice although I still think a few look too CG and too smooth but Im looking forward to seeing the effects in motion.

50 Shades Of Grey
I haven't read it and don't really want to but its big at the moment and there is a new bit of news about it... The producers of the social network have picked it up for a new film. I don't think I will be watching it... oh dear...

Dexter Season 7
Two video's have been released for Dexter s7 but they don't show much.
Thats one of them and the other just shows her in the bed and a tiny little alteration in the speech. Its an ok little teaser but it really doesnt say anything, whatever happens though there wont be a finale just yet as Dexter is already set to return for another season after this one.

Deus Ex Human Revolution
Today it was announced that Deus Ex the video game would be made into a live action movie, I haven't played the game but it does look like some good scifi. With this announcement and the Assassins Creed announcement just a few days ago will there be more movie films in the pipeline??

Thats it for today hope you have found some of it interesting!

Modern life is rubbish

I found this little gem randomly whilst on the bbc film network and gave it a little watch due to my familiarity with Rafe Spall (who is along with Paddy Considine one of the Andy's in Hot Fuzz). I have to say as a drama short I think it works really well, it tells a simple story in a short amount of time and gives a message whilst questioning that message through a caricature of a "believer". Yeah I really enjoyed this short, it seemed like the climax of a drama series without the need for all of the build of tension, it was the conclusion to an unseen debate that most of us are on one side of. I would recommend it as it is only 13mins. Oh and the final shot is really nicely composed and coloured and a great shot in general.

Justice League , Star Trek 2, Assassins Creed, Robocop

Nolan says no to the JLA
Firstly DC's superteam has been suggested as one of the next big movie franchises. With Chris Nolan heading Batmans last few films and now producing the Man of Steel Superman movie it seemed he may be the head of the project. Today Nolan has stated that is no way what was happening. As far as he is concerned he will not be involved with any batman film in the future including a JLA film.

Cumberbatch's Star Trek character revealed!
It was never going to be Kahn! Ever! And now we finally know exactly who will be the villain in Star Trek 2, Gary Mitchell. A classic Trek villain, an old friend of kirk and a man that gains amazing corrupting power... I dont know much about him but he looks to be interesting. Not only that but Cumberbatch is a great actor so it should be good!

Assassins Creed
Thats right Assassins Creed the movie is coming! And it seems like Fassbender will play main character Desmond. Not only that but before Ubisoft takes the film to any major studios it is giving Fassbender a chance to get his own production company involved in the funding and producing. So it sounds like he really is secured, Ubisoft officials said that Fassbender was their first choice and I cannot blame them, he looks right and can act..... really act, in my opinion his Prometheus role deserves an oscar.

Robocop Viral
I am a Robocop film fan, the cheesy originals are awesome! So I'm looking forward to a remake, personally I hope it keeps the tongue in cheek over the top action as the originals rather than making it a dark brutal film but no matter what its first viral looks cool. The viral doesn't tell us much, however the Omnicorp video does show that infomercials could feature in the film like they did in the original. It also shows some of the other tech that will feature, it looks to be a good little glimpse of the new Robocop film.
