Ringworld (1970 Larry Niven)

"Wind whistled around the edges and corners of the improbable. By now they were almost directly to spinward of the great mountain. The Arch glowed blue and sharp-edged, the stars were hard, vivid points."
Larry Niven's Ringworld is the first in a 4 book series set in the far future about a group of astronauts, of varying human and alien race, who travel to a previously unknown structure, a handmade ring that orbits a sun. Its a mad SF idea that is rationally explained in the book along with a massive amount of similarly mad ideas, most of these are well described and are really cool. They do unfortunately bog the story down a little, about half way through the book I started getting bored with the constant explanation of different devices at a science level and just waited for more story to kick in. The other problem I had with the book is that with suck extreme aliens and devices it is difficult to image it whilst you are reading it. Besides those small problems the book is really good, the ideas are good and the story is well thought out. It does feel like the first in a series though, theres a lot of set up and not a lot of action, still fun overall.
7/10
