I was told to watch and review this film so here it is!
Dark City is a supernatural thriller with an intriguing sense of mystery, it mixes some interesting characters together whilst dropping the audience in with the main character John Murdock down a dark, dark rabbit hole. Murdock's story is what the whole film is about or more specifically it is about him finding out his own story whilst you watch. The visual style looks strange, amazing for sure, the noir visuals and the shadowed twisted scenery growing and changing is really amazing. For the majority of the film I was wondering what the hell was wrong with the place but it definitely looked cool, a murky oppressive city filled with creepy white bald figures with complete control.
SPOILER ALERT As for the mystery itself I was really impressed with the outcome, I liked the way the characters switched around and I enjoyed the Scientists struggle. I thought the reasoning behind it was also interesting and the creatures or strangers using dead bodies and "Tuning" the world was an interesting way to get some really cool images and a decent story in a non cheesy way. The one problem with visuals was the end battle of Tuning with the pulsing air waves producing a massive energy ball thing... it seemed a little cliche and the tension it tried to gain by prolonging the battle wasn't achieved or even needed. END OF SPOILER
So overall its a decent dark thriller, well acted and brilliantly lit with some good ideas and evocative visuals. I enjoyed it and am sure most would!
7/10
